Employability is the perceived / assessed suitability for engaging someone with relevant formal qualification for carrying out specific tasks including leadership roles, leading to realisation of organisational goals on a sustainable basis.
Employability is the extent to which a potential employee meets overall (holistic) employer expectations in terms of knowledge, competence / capability, attitudes, maturity, progression.
This topic has gained attention due to the rising level of low employability of graduates, reaching alarming levels of 10 – 15% of all graduates who pass out, in the Indian context. This has led to huge waste of national resources by turning out products that are not fit for use, wasting hard earned resources on education, high NPAs on educational loans due to unrealised earnings, rising discontent among graduates, falling enrolment for UG / PG courses and closing down of colleges with disastrous long term macro level ramifications.
Employability is an issue of serious concern affecting professional graduates who spend lakhs for their education, largely in private sector educational institutions, who market their courses through inflated claims and other means. The gross level of employability of technical / management students is estimated to be in the 10-15% range. This is not only a private loss for the candidates but also a national loss of tax payers money by inefficient resource allocation; an ingenious transfer of wealth in the hands of adventurists running higher educational institutions. The low employability is due; in addition to superficial subject knowledge, the inability to meet complimentary traits essential to be employed.
To address this issue, it is proposed to train graduates on employability that addresses (employer) expectations beyond knowledge from class room training, endorsed by grades / marks awarded, that are used as a passport to claim eligibility for several jobs. Historically we have been conditioned to believe that a degree (formal qualification) in any subject would translate into a paid job. Reason could be that a job was defined as anything an employee does obeying instructions of the employer. Employee’s task was to use his/her skills on mundane tasks to meet operational / transactional requirements of the employer. Largely possession of the skill, obedience and integrity used to be desirable qualities. This has undergone paradigm shifts in roles of the educated class driven by economic growth, higher level of awareness, encouragement of private entrepreneurship, higher aspirations, shifts in economic policy, compulsions and opportunities for new initiatives, assuming commanding leadership roles, competition et al. The shift in roles has placed new role demands and higher expectations on the capability front of executives and new recruits. The training encompasses factors revolving around the subject of employability, what makes someone with formal qualifications stand out as a potential employee or even as a successful entrepreneur
